BFI Film Academy 2019/2020

The BFI Film Academy will be running again this starting this coming September. We are looking for committed, talented, young people between the age of 16 and 19 to be a part of the BFI Film Academy 2019/20 Network Programme delivered by Nerve Belfast Creative Learning Centre.

As a BFI Film Academy participant you will work with filmmakers and take part in a series of master classes and workshops with industry professionals, hear their top tips on how to get into and succeed in the film industry, get practice in developing your ideas and producing your own work.

By the end of the course you will have produced a short film along side completing a Level 2 NCFE Award in Preparing to Work in the Film Industry.

Once you have completed the Network course, you will become part the growing BFI Film Academy alumni network with access to BAFTA mentorships and career talks and other events.

Course will run each Thursday from 4.30pm-8.30pm – 

  • Start date – Thursday 19th September
  • End date – Thursday  13th February
  • Additional day – Script Writing Master Class Saturday 12th October (10.30am-4.30pm)

BFI will be off on the 31stOctober, 26thDecember and 2ndJanuary for holidays 

Shoot dates will be in November this will be a Saturday and Sunday (final dates TBD)  – you will only be required to be on set for one full weekend.

Please make sure that you can attend all these dates before signing up and you must be able to make your own transport arrangements to and from the centre.

Accreditation – You will work towards gaining a NCFE certificate, a recognised qualification amongst employers and colleges. To achieve this during the Film Academy, you’ll be required to manage your work and create and maintain your own portfolio and this may require some work outside of course hours.

Costs – The cost to participate in the BFI Film Academy delivered by Nerve Belfast is £25, refundable in full upon successful completion of the course. Bursaries will also be made available if you require assistance with travel, child care or other costs.

Eligibility – You need to be between the ages of 16 and 19 on the first day of the Academy programme. You must be a UK resident and able to commit to the programme for its duration and not be attending university or higher education.  


We are looking for enthusiasm and a genuine interest in film and a willingness to learn. If you love watching films and making films, this is an opportunity you don’t want to miss!

Successful applicants must be available for interview between Tuesday 10th September – Friday 13th September after school hours (other arrangements can be made upon request)
